Tyler WakefieldCOHORT 1, IndonesiaTyler Wakefield is a Junior studying Public Policy, Economics, and Energy & the Environment. During the summer of 2016, he lived in Kamanggih, a rural village in Sumba Island, Indonesia and researched how a recent electrification project impacted community empowerment. He is primarily concerned with climate change and hopes to work towards building a transformative social, political, and economic response which simultaneously addresses issues of systemic injustices and inequality. Tyler sees both energy access in the “developing world” and energy sovereignty in the “developed world” as means for community empowerment and environmental stewardship. Outside of EnergyX, Tyler leads the Duke Energy Club, is a member of the Duke Climate Coalition, IFC Sexual Assault Prevention Task Force, and Club Volleyball Team. This summer, Tyler will be working with the Rachel Carson Council as an Energy, Health, and Environmental Justice Intern and will return to Indonesia in August to continue energy access research.
